You may or may not agree, either way is fine with me! Every single thing starts out with a thought! Regardless of what it is; it will start out with thoughts that grow depending the power you give it. People don’t wake up addicted they get exposed to it for whatever reason and they willfully choose to engage in it. A person may ponder over doing a substance of some kind until they give in and do it. Many allow what has festered inside of them for years to lead them down a road of addictions. A lot of people took the same journey they saw their parents, other caregiver, friends, or family members take; while others decided on their own to take that particular path due to something they were dealing with in life. A long history of issues lead many to addictions. People want to numb their pains without realizing they’re actually adding to it. They get in too deep to the point of complete submersion.
Personally I don’t believe it’s a disease, what I believe is it’s a billion dollar making industry. Society wants people to believe it’s a disease so liquor industries, mental health facilities, and rehab places gets to stay in business. I know first hand no amount of treatment will cure someone who DOESN’T want to be cured. If the world REALLY thought it was a disease why do they sell alcohol? Why do they freely choose to make alcohol legal when because of it so many are dead in their graves? Alcohol and other substances have been reasons for many deaths whether by suicide, some other form of accident, overdose, or sickness due to it. Every single day someone dies due to the affects of some type of substance. If they didn’t die many have lost all they’ve acquired due to it (family, friends, possessions, health, etc).
Alcohol itself nor any form of substance kills. Over use and misuse of it can destroy the body and the mind which may ultimately lead to death. Alcohol or any form of substance will sit wherever it’s placed until someone picks it up to use it. The only people born with it in their bodies are children born to using mothers. It is not a disease! Long term use of it causes diseases! Cancers, heart problems, Crohn’s etc; those are diseases and even some of them can be prevented depending on the lifestyle of the individual.
Addictions of any kind are a choice (alcohol, any substance, food, sex, buying, many other things). People get offended when they hear it, but it’s the truth. People are their own problem. Many don’t deal with their many issues. People compile problems on top of the problems they already have. They make bad choices and decisions because they don’t deal with what’s plaguing them on the inside. They live unhappy lives because of it. If it were a disease I know I should have it, because it’s prevalent on both sides of my family (father and mother). There are several who are alcoholics.
Like suicide, no one decides out of the blue “I am going to kill myself today.” No, no, no, they don’t! People ponder over it. It’s the same way with becoming addicted to anything. The more you ponder over things, the more you give power to it, then the next thing you’re acting out on those thoughts. It’s 100% about a state of mind! As for alcohol and other substances I’ve seen up close and personal the affect it has on the individual and the lives of those around them. I’ve lost a best friend, aunts, and uncles to the affects of alcohol and substance abuse. None of them had to die the way they did, they made personal choices. One of my aunts even said “if it kill me it kills me, but I won’t stop drinking.” The affects of it did just that! It’s because she was controlled by it. She gave all of her will and power to it. All of them did! They were once healthy individuals and for whatever reason they chose the path of drugs and alcohol. They all chose to indulge in the lifestyle which ultimately caused their deaths.
My prayer is people regain their control. What they’re doing isn’t working. Seeking help is the best course of action. However, no amount of help can change an unwilling person. A person must want to change and the ONLY way they can change is by doing something different. We all have gone through and will go through things. Some people’s experiences are more extreme than others. Regardless, how we allow those things to affect us is up to each of us individually. We can grow from them or we can allow them to stagnate and stunt our growth. When people choose to partake in drugs and alcohol they willfully choose to add to their problems in life.
If you have to do drugs or alcohol to be with someone or to belong to a particular group, etc, then you’re definitely associating with the wrong people (friend, family, or foe)! Never ever allow anyone to talk you into doing something you KNOW you shouldn’t do. Stop giving power to your thoughts! The more power you give to your thoughts, you give to your feelings, which in return fuels your will to act upon them.
I don’t believe alcohol is a disease. The disease is the state of mind. If you lose your will you will lose your way! This is only my opinion!
